In the whirlwind of corporate life, where stress and burnout are all too familiar, there’s a pressing need for introspection—not only at a personal level but also within our organizations. Recently, I delved into a topic that many corporate executives may overlook: the distinction between core values and corporate values, and how this impacts not just your professional satisfaction but your overall well-being.

The Evolving Nature of Core Values

As we grow and experience life, our core values often change. This evolution isn’t just a personal phenomenon; it’s something I’ve observed companies going through as well. Every organization must periodically reassess its mission and vision statements in conjunction with its core values. You may ask, “Why should I care?” A staggering 80% of workers feel stressed at work; this dissatisfaction often stems from a misalignment between personal and corporate values.

A while back, I faced this very issue in one of my companies. I realized I had outgrown it. Although I loved the mission and the relationships built around it, I felt stifled and disconnected. The company couldn’t grow with me, and the result? A decline that I knew had everything to do with alignment—or rather, misalignment.

The Importance of Alignment

Identifying whether your corporate values resonate with your personal ones isn’t just busywork; it’s vital for your mental health and job satisfaction. As corporate executives, we must not only focus on our roles but also engage our teams in conversations about their values. From the ground up, a unified vision and coherence with one’s personal ambitions are essential for preventing burnout.

When we notice feelings of unfulfillment—it could be as simple as disinterest in daily meetings or a growing disconnect from our work—it’s time to investigate. In my experience, truly understanding what’s behind your dissatisfaction can unveil critical insights. Are you still passionate about your role? Does your company’s mission still resonate with you? If you’re finding yourself saying “no” more often than “yes,” it may be time to reassess.

Actionable Steps for Rediscovery

  1. Reflect on Core Values: Take time to analyze your core values. How have they shifted over the past few years? Are they still in harmony with your company’s direction?

  1. Initiate Conversations: Don’t shy away from discussing values with your team. A misalignment could be impacting morale across the board—let’s find out together.

  1.  Create Space for Growth: Allow yourself the grace to evolve. It’s perfectly acceptable if you or your organization has outgrown your initial setup. Both parties deserve the opportunity to thrive.
